Did You Know: A Single Word Can Bring You Blessings for Ten Generations — Or Cause You to Be Reborn as an Animal?

Can you believe that a single word could change an entire life?

There is a story about a monk from long ago who, because of one careless remark, had to be reborn as an animal for five hundred consecutive lifetimes. It may sound hard to believe, but that is the truth of the law of cause and effect (karmic law) as taught by the Venerable Thích Chân Quang. In daily life, we often think of cause and effect (karmic law) as something distant and abstract, yet in reality it is operating every second of every moment, governing every aspect of our lives.

The Law of Cause and Effect: No One Can Escape It

The Venerable Thích Chân Quang emphasized: "The law of cause and effect is an absolute principle of the universe. No matter how elevated a person's spiritual practice may be, they are always subject to the law of cause and effect. No one can escape it, and no one has the right to escape it."

Unlike rules made by human beings, cause and effect (karmic law) is a natural law with no exceptions. Whether you are a king or a beggar, rich or poor, all must submit to its workings.

Sow One Seed, Reap Ten Thousand Fruits

What is most sobering is that the law of cause and effect does not work in the simple way of "one seed, one fruit." The Venerable taught: "The law of cause and effect is far more severe than simply sowing one seed and reaping one fruit. Sow one seed and you may reap a thousand fruits, ten thousand fruits. Sometimes a single word is enough — just one word can bring blessings for ten generations and still not be exhausted… or one careless word alone can condemn you to ten lifetimes as an animal, unable to return to the human realm."

Imagine that — a small action like giving a gift, or a single careless word, can create karmic results of enormous magnitude, stretching across many lifetimes. For this reason, one who truly understands cause and effect (karmic law) always lives with care in every word and every action.

Doing Good Does Not Always Bring Good in the Way We Expect

Many people believe that doing good will certainly bring good results, but reality is far more complex. The Venerable gave an example: "Sometimes we want to make someone happy, yet they end up feeling annoyed. Sometimes we think our action will cause them suffering, only to find that they actually enjoy it."

For instance, you might give a cake to your teacher, not knowing she is on a diet. Or a robber might kill a violent, abusive husband, unknowingly freeing his wife and family from suffering. Cause and effect (karmic law) is not simply "give joy, receive joy; give suffering, receive suffering." It must take into account the actual impact of our actions on others.

Cause and Effect Operates Objectively, Independent of Religion

Another important point is that the law of cause and effect is not governed by any religion. The Venerable affirmed: "Whether a person follows Christianity, Buddhism, or Islam… it does not matter. Cause and effect walks its own path, utterly objective and utterly fair."

Even if someone fervently believes that killing will earn them a place in heaven, they will still suffer the painful consequences of their actions. Cause and effect (karmic law) favors no one; it simply reflects exactly what we have sown.

Living with Awareness to Master Your Own Life

Understanding the law of cause and effect gives us the key to guide our lives toward where we wish to go. Rather than living indulgently and selfishly, one who understands cause and effect (karmic law) will always restrain themselves, living only to love and to serve. For they know that "the seed of selfishness bears the fruit of lowliness, suffering (dukkha), and hardship."

In contrast, a life of selflessness and willingness to sacrifice will bring happiness and glory in the future.

Begin today — with every word, with the smallest of actions. Do not let ignorance cost you lifetimes of suffering. Live with awareness, sow wholesome seeds, and reap sweet fruits for yourself and for all beings.
